| Gallery label | The sketchbook and designs for a teapot by Eleanor Kearney are valuable recent additions to the Designs Collection as they represent the work of a leading contemporary metalwork designer working in pewter. They cover the whole design process from initial sketch to technical drawings for the manufacturer and chart the design as it evolved into the final piece. They are of particular significance to the Collection as the teapot for which they were made was acquired by the Metalwork Department earlier this year (M.12-1998).
The inspiration for the teapot came from a medieval Spanish castle perched on a rocky outcrop which the designer saw whilst on holiday. She is interested in rounded forms stacked on top of other forms and how they balance and intergrate with each other. Pewter is another particular interest for the designer, who is a keen advocate of its re-evaluation as a practical, cheap alternative to silver and which has its own peculiar qualities of reflection and beauty. |
