Bowl Set

ca. 1972 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This porcelain set, made in Liling (Hunan province) in around 1972, is decorated with children playing table tennis. Alternated to each figure is an inacription reading: 'duanlian shenti' (= taking exercise), a common slogan in China during the period of the Cultural revolution (1966-1976).

The ping pong may allude to the so called 'ping pong diplomacy', which followed Richard Nixon's first visit to China on 21st February 1972, when more efforts were undertaken by China and the United States to establish new diplomatic relationships.
