The Good-Humoured Ladies, with choreography by Leonide Massine and designs by Leon Bakst, was premiered by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes at the Constanzi Theatre, Rome, on 12 April 1917. Tchernicheva created the role of Constanza. The production was redesigned by Bakst for London in 1918
The drawing was executed and published as plate 11 in the monograph The Art of Lubov Tchernicheva which included a portrait by Glyn Philpot and eight full page hand-coloured illustrations two decorations and cover design by Vera Willoughby together with an appreciation by Cyril W. Beaumont, published by C. W. Beaumont, London, 1921.

Physical description | Full length female figure on pointe turned left with arms upraised, wearing elaborate exaggerated 18th century dress, the petticoat and overdress in orange red decorated with flowers and green foliage set between a foliage lattice, painted pale brown on the overdress, the sleeves, neckline, overdress edges and back trimmed with orange and white striped frills. The background is black with a grey floor tinted green around the figure. Titled: Tchernacheva. Watercolour and gouache. |
