CABINET ENGLISH: 1876-1880 Designer unknown Made by Wright & Mansfield, London Satinwood inlaid with tulipwood, painted panels A cabinet of very similar design was shown at the Philadelphia International Exhibition of 1876, held to commemorate the centenary of the Declaration of Independence. The 'Adams Style', based on late eighteenth century design sources like Sheraton's Drawing Book (1793), was highly fashionable at this time, and the Wright & Mansfield cabinet of 1867 in Room 120 is the earliest example in this collection.(pre October 2000)
Object history
The version of this sideboard shown by Wright and Mansfield at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition 1876 was illustrated in the Art Journal in 1876 and described and illustrated in the Cabinet Maker and Art Furnisher 7 (1 July 1886) p. 23, illus p. 14.
