Oak chair with red leather upholstery on the back and seat. The back rest is gilt stamped with two crests, one with an eagle on a coronet above the motto 'ABSTULIT QUI DEDIT' and the other with a swan on a coronet above the motto 'DORENAVANT'

  • Supplied by Holland and Sons Oak with red morocco upholstery Costessy Hall, Norfolk, built in 1826 by J.C. Buckler for the Stafford family, was one of the earliest serious 19th century Gothic Revival country houses. In 1866, Holland and Sons undertook an extensive scheme of refurbishment in the principal rooms, prior to a visit by the Prince of Wales. This chair is one of 42 from the 'gallery or dining room' and is inscribed, in Latin, 'He who has given has taken away'.(pre July 2001)
