This hospital first opened as the Glasgow Lunatic Asylum in 1814. Its name has changed many times over the decades reflecting the evolving nature of language to describe mental health facilities and the patronage of such institutions. In 1824 it became the Glasgow Royal Lunatic Asylum. Replaced by a new hospital in 1843, this was renamed the Glasgow Royal Mental Hospital in 1931 and finally the Gartnavel Royal Hospital in 1963 under which name it still operates today as a specialist provider of healthcare for mental illness.
