A.Noel Billinghurst was chief designer for The Graydon Studios, a glassworks owned by Mrs E Graydon-Stannus which is probably best known for its near-reproduction of 18thC Irish and English glass. However, at the same time, the glassworks worked a substantial line of art glass under the name 'Gray-Stan' for which Billinghurst was responsible. The glass was sold in Pont Street London and abroad, particularly in America. While the commercial art production was largely of free-blown coloured glass (the chief gaffer was the Irishman James Manning) this vase is one of Billinghurst's personal works.
