Kerchief
1880s (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Kerchief, cotton embroidered with silk in double darning running in a single line. Satin and metal thread have been double darned, with slanted satin stitch and double stitch running in a line.
There is a border along all four sides in which a meander is formed by metal thread which gives the appearance of a twisted ribbon. A floral sprig with a red flower and some buds grow from alternate sides of the meander. In each corner is a diagonal arrangement of flowers and leaves: it begins with a horizontal arrangement of segments which may represent the ground; roots appear to grow down from this. There is a small mound in the centre from which rises a vertical stem. There is a pair of slightly curving serrated leaves in two shades of green and a large central flower in shades of pink with a metal thread centre. From this grow two pink rose buds and the vertical stem continues with a pair of leaves, a pair of delicate carnations and it ends with a bud and two leaves.
