To switch from pencil to pen, Shepard traced his pencil designs onto a new surface by shading on the back and re-drawing outlines from the front. He made a pen drawing, which the printers then turned Shepard’s pen drawings into line blocks. The process involves exposing a photographic negative onto a zinc plate coated with gelatin, treating the exposed areas (now hardened gelatin) to protect them, and putting the plate into acid. This eats into the unprotected areas, leaving the image in relief.

[This label applies to E.665-1973, a pen and ink loan and E.830-1973, and also the proof E.820-1973. Two facsimile line blocks were made to accompany the group.]
