Brief description | Design for a chalice for Lancing College by William Butterfield, 1878 |
Gallery label | The Gothic Revival architect William Butterfield was the leading figure in the movement to reform the design of church silver and fittings, promoted by the high church Cambridge Camden Society. He helped to establish medieval chalice types in the Church of England after the 1840s. For church plate he went back to medieval models, as in this chalice made some forty years after he began designing silver. The sheet, complete with job number, is a contract drawing with the firm of Hart Son and Peard, who made the chalice and paten. The drawing must have been sent back to Butterfield, as it came to the Museum via the architect's descendants. As in real medieval church plate, the chalice is partly decorated with jewellery and precious stones given by the faithful. [Undated text found in file, 2016] |
