The title of this novel is a play on the French phrase 'Ça ne fait rien' (It doesn't matter). The protagonist is a soldier named Dick Steele, starting out as a weathered Canadian railway engineer, he joins the British Army in World War I, and becomes disollusioned following the horrors of war. The novel covers his life in war and fatherhood following romances with two women.
