This type of glass is a confinement cups. These were presented to mothers at the end of their confinement after giving birth. They were used for serving 'kandeel' to the young mother and guests. This was a restorative mixture of wine, egg yolks, sugar, cinnamon, cloves and lemon peel. Such cups are often decorated with scenes of childbirth. This example shows the arms of Jan George Matthes and Maria Wernier of Amsterdam who were engaged on 3rd April 1778 and whose first child was born on 28th May 1779.
