Label stuck onto the base of the Samari figure states: "This Golden Bull or Chindit belonged to King Thibaw the last? King of Burma. It was bought by my father Col. H.S.F. Ramsden, C.B.E. (then a subaltern or captain in the Burma War; 1885). Probably at Mandalay or Rangoon". Signed ECF Ramsden; 1976 (Label; English)

Object history
This came from one of the nine royal thrones in King Thibaw's (1878-1885) Palace of Mandalay. Treated as a guardian figure one of these stood at each of the four corners of all the thrones.
The label stuck onto the base of Samari :"This Golden Bull or Chindit belonged to King Thibaw the last? King of Burma. It was bought by my father Co. H.S.F. Ramsden CBE (then a subaltern or captain in the Burma War, 1885. Probably at Mandalay or Rangoon" signed ECF Ramsden 1976
