Object history
This photograph was part of a group of seven small framed or cased portraits. They were given to the vendor's aunt, a governess, by her employers. The leather case was originally made for another object.
Historical context
This group illustrates the interrelations between miniature painting and photography at the end of the 19th century, including painted photographs, miniatures painted on a photographic base on ivory, and miniatures on ivory painted from photographs.
