Object history
The clockwork generator was devised to enable the reception of radio broadcasts of essential health and environmental information in remote areas of Africa which lacked electricity and battery power supplies. The mechanism is operated by turning a handle on the proper-left side of the radio's exterior. The radio was shortlisted for the Design Week design awards in
March 1996 and awarded best Consumer Product in the I.D. 42nd Annual Design Review, 1996. Trevor Baylis and Andy Davey of TKO were awarded BBC Designers of the Year and the radio also won the product category of the BBC Design Awards, announced in July 1996.
