Seated Buddha
Figure of the Buddha Shakyamuni seated with his hands in bhumisparsha mudra. He has a tall, pointed "lotus bud" on the top of his ushnisha and a narrow band round the hairline across his forehead. His robes are arranged in highly stylised folds, mainly expressed by parallel ridges with S-shaped curls along the borders. His fingers are of slightly unequal length; his toes are intended to be of equal length. The throne is stepped and sharply waisted. Dry lacquer, gilt on red, the lowest section of the throne and the middle band of its waisted section are red. Burmese; date uncertain but it is possibly 17th or 18th century.
When acquired the this figure was wearing a necklace:
IS. 21A-1970- Necklace, in two parts of silver and red threaded braid plaited into the form of a chain alternating with four, large, cushion-shaped beads of the same material on each part. One part ends in a bead and tassel, the other in a heart-shaped plaque of yellow fabric, silver thread, sequins and red glass beads. Probably Indian; 19th century.
