Place of origin |
This print is from Views of Rome (Vedute di Roma), a set of 135 plates produced individually by Giovanni Battista Piranesi from the late 1740s until his death in 1778.
According to Piranesi’s cataloguer John Wilton-Ely, the earliest fixed date for the series is 1751 when 34 of the plates were published by Giovanni Bouchard in Le Magnificenze di Roma. It has been established that at least 19 were available in a distinct set much earlier, probably even before 1748. In the 1756 list of Piranesi’s work, there were 39 Views for sale.
Piranesi’s sons Francesco and Pietro later republished the Views in two bound albums (First Paris edition, 1800-1807).
The copperplates are now in the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, Rome.
