The traditional attribution to Perino is defensible, though the drawing may come from his school rather than from his own hand. Compare the study of a unicorn's head in the Albertina ascribed to Perino by Pouncey (The Burlington Magazine, 95, 1953, p. 111, illustrated in fig. 93; illustrated also in Albertina catalogue, 6, no. 720, as by Battista Franco).
Stefano del Bufalo employed Polidoro Caldara to decorate the facade of the garden house of the Palazzo Bufalo in Rome with frescoes. He may have been a patron of Perino too. A buffalo's head in a medallion was one of the motifs painted by Polidoro on the garden house. (see E. Maccari, Graffiti e Chiaroscuri esistenti nell'esterno delle cade di Roma, Rome, 1876, pl. 5). The house has since been destroyed. |
