Object history | A sketch design in Tate (T09987) is for the figures in this composition, shown in the centre of an oval tray with a border of bacchic subjects. A tray to this design in the Royal Collection was made in 1812-13 but lacking this central composition (RCIN 50837).A pair of sideboard dishes, hallmarked 1813-14, marked by Paul Storr, were made with this design in the center (The Glory of the Goldsmith: Magnificent Gold and Silver from the Al-Tajir Collection, London, 1989, fig. 141, pp. 182-183.). The horizontal format of this drawing suggests that it is for the tray. An octagonal drawing in the British Museum of the same composition in a regular format is probably for the sideboard dish (1900,0824.448).
The composition is taken from an antique Roman cameo discovered in Via Aurelia in 1661. This was engraved by F. Buonarotti in 1698 and included in Bernard de Montfaucon's 'L’Antiquité expliquée' of 1719. It is now in the Louvre Museum.
Bought from H. Graves in 1857 for 21 pounds. The register records it was "In a gilt frame much damaged". |
