'Electronic Textiles' screen-printed cotton furnishing fabrics designed by Eddie Squires for Warner and Sons Ltd; British, 1967
These are some of the colourways of three designs which formed a Collection called Programmed Pattern, produced in March 1967. This trio reflects Eddie Squires' fascination with the technologies which began to revolutionise communication in the late 1960s and numerous painted designs and images pasted into his scrapbooks look forward to the age of computer based design. Resembling Paolozzi's screen prints on paper, the acid bright clashing colours are influenced by the prevailing vogue for Pop Art and psychedelia. The repeating forms of the Programmed Pattern fabrics are geometric and regular, yet they appear to undulate across the textile. The fabric sold for £1 4s 6d per yard.
The following passage is from an article about Eddie Squires in The Sunday Times 18 February 1968:
"Each year his job is to produce three modern designs to add spice to what is predominantly a traditional collection. … The idea for this new Programmed Pattern collection came to him while window shopping at Zeev Aram's furniture shop in Chelsea - a mecca for all architects and designers and he admits the place he would most like to see his fabrics hanging is in Mr Aram's hitherto all-white showroom."
