Untitled (Tree)

Photograph
1995 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Shore pioneered colour art photography in the US during the 1970s, but shifted to black and white for the series Essex County in which this image appears. Made with a camera producing 8 × 10-inch negatives yielding high levels of detail, the series shows almost hallucinatory concentration on the texture of trees and rocks in the North American Adirondack mountains. Here, the tree almost fills the frame, seeming to bar the way ahead.
