  • At upper centre, in another hand, in brown ink (with the museum’s inv. no.), 2304
  • (There were evidently labels identifying the four coats of arms at top and bottom corners, but only the lines pointing to the shields remain (whatever text was once attached to these lines was eliminated when the sheet was trimmed to its present ogee format).)
Gallery label
The drawing demonstrates the popularity of moralising biblical subjects in early 16th-century Netherlandish art. The main scene shows the Old Testament story of the Judgement of Solomon, whilst themes of justice and good government continue in the lower scene. This is a design for one of the windows of St Jacobskerk’s Church in The Hague.

Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830), London (L. 2445); offered for sale through Samuel Woodburn (dealer), London; from whom purchased (together with a design for a cup [inv. no. 2305], both as ascribed to Hans Holbein) by the museum, June 1860 for £51. 0s. 0d.
