A shield of an abbot of the Premonstratensian Abbey of Bellelay in the Jura, probably of Niklaus I. Schnell of Bil (d.1530)., the 28th Abbot (elected 1508). St. Nicholas of Myra stands on the right. On either side, pillars with grotesque amorini and two compartments at the top with scenes of the Sacrifice of Isaac and the Blessing of Jacob. The flesh tones are picked out in red-brown 'rot-lot' invented by L. Ringler of Glasmaler.

Object history
The Biblical scenes are copied from Holbein's "Historiarum Veteris Testamenti Icones ad Vivum Espressae"; the ornament from the Passion Series. The red-brown fleshtones use the pigment "rot-lot" invented by L. Ringler of Glasmaler.
