Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Kubota joined the Magnum photo agency in 1965, and has since produced numerous books documenting his world travels, including From Sea to Shining Sea: A Portrait of America (1992). Many of the pine trees shown here in Yellowstone National Park are so ravaged that their branches are stripped, leaving only spear-like trunks. A line of migrating bison in the foreground lends scale to the scene.
