Incense Burner
Incense-burner (fang ding) of gilt copper, with engraved ornament and decoration in cloisonné enamel. The subject of the decoration comprises the following Buddhist symbols: the wheel, the shell, the flower, the vase, the two fish, and the ju-i sceptre; the symbol of dualism (yin-yang), and the sounding stone (ch'ing).
The body rectangular with two upright loop handles rising from the projecting rim. It is decorated in red, dark blue, turquoise-blue, yellow, green, and white, and has a border of yin-yang repeated. The whole is supported on four circular legs; the angles of the body and the upper part of the legs have projecting ridges.
Chinese; Ming dynasty, 16th century.
