The round crystal vessel would have contained a relic of a saint or holy person, such as a piece of bone or a shred of cloth. It is surrounded by a stylised copper halo and sits on a lotus pedestal. This shape is called a ‘wish-fulfilling jewel’. These are believed to bestow blessings on those who suffer, to grant wishes, to appease desire and to bring clarity to the understanding of the Buddhist law.
