Hair Ornament

1800-1900 (made)
Place of origin

Pair of hair ornaments of gold filigree work; each is set with 3 blueish-green and 3 pink mirrored glass beads. The beads are hollow coloured glass spheres with a mirrored interior. They have been cut from tube form and the edges are rough and unfinished.

Narrow curved strips terminating in rings on both ends. The upper surface is decorated with raised filigree ornament of cicadas, flowers, butterflies and mythical beasts (qilin).

Each has two stamped marks on the underside: 'quan zhen', probably the maker's mark; 'ba cheng' probably the metal finess (purity) mark, which indicates to be just above 18-carat gold (pure gold is 24-carat gold).
