Place of origin

Monochrome porcelains were among the greatest achievements of Jingdezhen kilns. They were popular with both Chinese and foreigner consumers, and used extensively by the imperial court.

Black glazes were obtained from varying concentrations of iron oxides. The greater the concentration of iron the darker the colour. Decorations painted in gold were often used, as in this vase, on black glazes. Products of this kind were especially popular in the Middle East.
