Jar

1590-1630 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Jar of irregular shape, consisting of a depressed globe with upright mouth rim of oval plan, rounding below to a low, uneven ring foot. The mouth rim has been repaired with gold lacquer in several places. Where the body has burnt orange-buff in one place on the inside, wheel-turning marks are visible. The glaze is opaque and creamy-grey with fine crackling; in places it has developed a slight opalescent bloom characteristic of so-called 'madara' type Karatsu ware. In other areas, especially on the lower exterior, it has shrivelled into patches, stopping well above the foot.
