Chair

Corner chair. Decorated in black and gold lacquer. Chinese, for the European market. c.1735.

The seat frame mortised and tenoned into the three circular sectionrear legs, which are of one piece with the three back uprights, and also mortised and tenoned into the front cabriole legs, which is decorated at the knee with a shell motif in relief. All four legs end in plan pad feet. The two shoes are pinned into the back members of the seat frame, and mortised and tenoned into the side posts. Shoulder pieces are mortised and tenoned into the legs and underside of the seat frame on all four legs.

The slightly concave curvilinear splats are half-lapped into the shoes and tongue-and-grooved into the seat frame. The splats and the three back uprights are mortised and tenoned into the underside of the broad curvilinear top rail, which is in three sections joined by a pressure peg joint (Ecke joint no.22).

Modern strengthening members have been glued and nailed along the inside of the rear members of the seat frame, and an angle block screwed in behind the front leg. The upholstery is modern, the seat frame itself possibly original, but obscured by the upholstery.

Decoration: The rear of the spats, posts, seat frame and top rail left undecorated in plain black lacquer. The decoration otherwise in gold lacquer painted on black. On the top rail a basket of flowers, birds, butterflies and foliage. On the posts butterflies and foliage, possibly repainted. On the splats, vases of flowers and butterflies. On the shoe, scrolling foliage. On the front members of the seat frame a formalised arabesque motif. The shell on the front leg gilded, and the leg decorated with arabesque motifs.
