'Kahin Shiryu' impressed on base (In 1827, Hozen, the 11th generation head of the Nishimura family, was given a gold seal inscribed 'Kahin Shiryu' by the Daimyo (provincial lord) of Kii (modern day Wakayama Prefecture) after building a kiln for him. He was also given a silver seal inscribed 'Eiraku'. From that date ceramics made by the family borer these marks.)

In 1827, Hozen, the 11th generation head of the Nishimura family, was given a gold seal inscribed 'Kahin Shiryu' by the Daimyo (provincial lord) of Kii (modern day Wakayama Prefecture) after building a kiln for him. He was also given a silver seal inscribed `Eiraku'. From that date ceramics made by the family bore these marks.
Object history
Purchased from the Japanese Commissioners for the Philadelphia Exposition of 1876, accessioned in 1877. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
