Place of origin |
Stand, one of pair, square in form constructed with a flat slab for the base, four moulded panels round the sides, and a flat slab pierced with a central circular hole for the top. Corner joins inside are reinforced with small cylinders of clay, but joins are carelessly luted together with several small gaps. The flat base is unglazed and has a square recess in the centre; marks of the cutting tool used to slice across the base visible. The sides and top of the stand are glazed, the inside unglazed. The four sides are moulded with a lobed lower edge, and a design of flowers and leaves in relief. The sides are painted with overglaze iron red in two shades, green, black and brown, and there is gilding.
