CARPET Hand-knotted wool pile. Yarkand; 19th century. 1469-1883 (I.S.) This carpet displays a mingling of Chinese and Persian influences, producing a distinctive regional style. The floral pattern of the central field is reminiscent of Persian design, although the separate elements, such as the clusters of stylised cloud-heads, are typically Chinese in character. The inner border is similarly of Chinese origin besides the typical Samarkand triple-blossom motif of the outer border. However the five-flower branches are characteristic of Xinjiang.
