Box. Wood base with decoration painted in red on a black ground. Cylindrical, the cover fitting deeply over the box. Box black, with three concentric lines round the lower and under part; interior coloured brick-red. Cover decorated with concentic lines round the sides; the top divided into a central medallion within three concentric terraced parts, the four compartments divided by simple concentric lines painted on red and decorated, also in red, with a spaced design of cloud scrolls.
Compare the similar decorated box in the Linden-Museum, Stuttgart, 04 20. 720 L, ex Low-Beer Collection. Published as no.4 in Klaus Brandt, ''Lagres chinois du Linden-Museum de Stuttgart'', Musee Guimet 11 April - 26 May 1986, and there dated Qin dynasty (221-206BC). (cc 17/10/88)
