Model piece for the backcloth and cut cloth in Act I of Robinson Crusoe. The scene depicts the interior of an 18th century-style room painted predominately in browns. At the rear of the room is an alcove window fronted by columns and curtains, which overlooks the port of Bristol. The remainder of the room is furnished with two armchairs, and the walls are decorated with paintings. To the left is an internal door, and to the right is an alcoved china display cabinet. Unsigned by the artist.

Object history | This Model piece by Anthony Holland is part of an extensive collection of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 1996. The design was executed for Opera Rara's production of Offenbach's operetta Robinson Crusoe at the Collegiate (now Bloomsbury) Theatre, March 7th, 1973. The operetta was translated by Don White, and the production was directed by William Chappell. The production was subsequently revived by the London Opera Centre at Sadler's Wells in April 1974, and July 1976. |
