Set design for Act II (Hannibal's Headquarters in a Temple, about a mile East of Rome) of "The Road to Rome". The scene, predominately painted in purple, depicts the interior of a Roman temple with five grey columns. The interior ceiling and walls are draped with purple fabric or curtains. One of the curtains is pulled back to reveal a mountain landscape in the distance. The interior is furnished with a bed; table; chair; and incense burners.

Object history | This Set design by Anthony Holland is part of an extensive collection of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 1996. The design was executed for a production of Robert Emmet Sherwood's play "The Road to Rome", Liverpool Repertory Theatre, 1933. The play was produced by William Armstrong. Historical significance: These designs mark Anthony Holland's debut as a stage designer in the professional theatre. |
