With indented corners, black lacquer inlaid with mother-of-pearl, decorated on the top with a river landscape with figures engaged in various pursuits. The curved sides of red lacquer with basketry panels inset. Diaper border on the vertical edge. Similar basketry on the lower part.
19/11/1984; described as definitely not Chinese but Ryukyuan by Yoshinobu Tokugawa, joint author with Hirokazu Arakawa of 'Ryukyu shitsu kogei' (1977). The design and technique both typical of Ryukyuan work, dated tentatively to the late 18th-early 19th century. This opinion was accepted, and the object now to be labelled, RYUKYU ISLANDS; late 18th-early 19th century.
Conservation: 15/2/1974 -18/6/1974 Loose areas of mother-of-pearl treated with hot resin and wax.
