Incense box (kôgo), of squared form and with rounded corners, wood covered in black lacquer with gold nashiji lacquer (a ground of irregularly-shaped flakes of gold suspended in clear or yellowish lacquer resembling pear skin) over the top, sides and underside of the box, with a flock of chidori (plovers) flying straight across the top of the lid from right to left among wisps of clouds or mist in gold and black hiramaki-e lacquer (metal powder sprinkled on to a lacquer design before it has hardened so that it is in low relief) and takamaki-e lacquer (maki-e in which parts of the design can be raised by clay charcoal powder) under a half-moon inlaid with pewter in the upper left corner; the inside of the box is covered in black lacquer with a more sparse nashiji lacquer. Both edges of the lid and base are edged with silver.
