probably 18th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Cushion fragment for chair back, of silk tapestry (kesi), woven in coloured silks and gold thread on a red ground. In the middle is a vase filled with peaches and flowers, surrounded by scrolled clouds and flying bats carrying swastika symbols in their mouths. The other symbols in the intervals of the cloud scrolls bound with fillets represent the eight emblems of the Daoist immortals.
The main body is in bright red, however there is severe discolouration in the centre of the object, which is now flesh-coloured. Towards the centre-left side of the bottom there is a hole of 5cm x 8cm. There is a hole of 4.5 x 4cm on the bottom right side. There is a hole of 8 x 4cm along the seams at the bottom left side. There are 9 obvious patches of discolouration on the right-hand side border (now yellowed). There is a loss of sewing thread along the main pictorial body and hem on the bottom right. The corner of the seam here shows some signs of wear. The sides are lined, but the surface and insides of the outer side are worn out. There is staining in the form of black-coloured spots on the hem. The object’s warp-weft density are 20 x 38 threads/cm2. The cross-sectional width of the warp and weft are 0.1mm and 0.3mm respectively.
