Physical description

Rectangular thit-ta (storage box) with hinged lid (two metal hinges).
Central panel of scrolling vegetal (Chiang Mai origin) relief design featuring birds and flower heads. These panels are framed with multiple borders of acheik, rope & repeating lotus patterns.

Object history note

4 teak wood boxes with black ornamentation in lacquer relief were received from "Burmah" in 1855 by the India Museum. They subsequently acquired the 1880 numbers of 01179, 01180, 01181 & 01182. Descriptive line

Burmese teak thit-ta of thayo work finished in black lacquer. Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885). Decorated with vegetal designs featuring birds and flower heads. ca. before 1855.
