The design, chiefly in shades of blue, is composed of four phoenixes (fenghuang) amid sprays of the tree-peony, the ground being filled in with sprays of the magnolia (yulan), rose, aster, narcissus, chrysanthemum, lotus and peach blossoms. Lined with yellow silk.

Purchased from Mr. P. Kierulff (Villa Peking, Hellerup, Denmark), accessioned in 1901. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.

Note on register:
A bed-curtain from the imperial palace shown by the character of the embroidered design and the lining of imperial yellow silk. Four phoenixes in the midst of sprays of the tree peony, the ground being filled in with sprays of other flowers, the magnolia yulan, rose, aster, narcissus, chrysanthemum, lotus and peach blossom. Might in part of the bridal trousseau of the consort of the Emperor Tongzhi which was dispersed after the death of the emperor and the empress's suicide in 1874.
