Panel

mid 18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Picture panel of cream coloured satin embroidered with silver thread and coloured silks in long and short, satin and stem stitches with knots and laid and couched work. Lined with cotton.

The chief feature of the design is a large vase on a stand, mainly dark blue in colour and decorated with clouds and dragon scrolls. The neck of the vase is white and bears a shou character in black. The vase contains a flowering peony branch. Behind the vase are two crossed spears with dark blue tassels at the hilt. From side projection on the spears hang, on the right a fish and on the left a musical stone of jade.

Associated with he hanging are two tassels made of stuffed cotton balls covered with circles of cord, with a pattern in blue, mauve and white silk, and small round glass beads. Underneath each ball is a small metal bell from which hangs a cream-coloured silk tassel. Each tassel has a buff coloured cord for suspension.
