Hanging

18th century-19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Hanging with fringes. This hanging is composed of four different parts: a upper plain weave cotton band, a central embroidered panel, an embroidered border and the fringes. The central panel is made of a claret silk crêpe ground embroidered with twisted silks in satin stitch and gold thread in couched work, net-stitching. The embroidery represents the birthday celebration of a elderly man. This panel is older than the rest of the hanging. It could possibly date back from the early 18th Century (mainly because of the shades of colour used, the twisted silks, and the quality of the gold thread embroidery). The border is composed of a white silk satin band embroidered with flowers (prunus, bamboo, chrysanthemum) in shades of blue floss silks in satin stitch. This work is typical from the 2nd half of the 19th century.
