Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Court vest (chaogua) for an imperial consort, of tapestry-weave silk (kesi), woven in coloured silks and gold thread; some of the details have been executed with the brush. The design consists of five-clawed dragons pursuing flaming jewels among clouds (four in the front and three on the back); in the intervals are bats and the eight Buddhist emblems tied with fillets, all above a turbulent wave border from which issued craggy rocks. The lishui (standing water) stripes at the hem are interspersed with sprays of peony and lotus flowers. The garment has edged with a band of brocade patterned with small dragon medallions and the Eight Treasures (ba bao).
