Place of origin |
Hanging panel of red silk embroidered with silver thread and coloured silks in satin and stem stitches, with couched work. The hanging is lined with linen and has a series of black tapes along the top for suspension.
In the centre of the hanging is a long inscription worked in silver-gilt thread. Around it is a border of fret pattern and peonies. Next, a wider border depicting figures, sages, etc. in a landscape or pavilions. At the top of this border is a scene of an Emperor and Empress with attendants, seated by a shrine before which two small figures are kneeling in worship. Another narrow band of fret pattern and peonies divides this border from the next, depicting birds including peacock, crane, mandarin duck and phoenix amidst flowering branches of prunus blossom, peony, magnolia, and lotus. This last border is at the top and sides of the hanging only. At the bottom of the hanging are two large and three small dogs of Fo. At the top is a five-clawed dragon in between two phoenixes with clouds and bats in the background.
