mid 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Hanging panel in blue silk embroidered with coloured silks and silk cord, silver and silver-gilt thread in long and short, satin and knot stitches and couched work.

The design shows four rats wearing short jackets, pulling along a three wheeled chariot on which stands a large vase filled with peonies, chrysanthemums and prunus blossom. Birds are flying above and perching on the prunus branches. There is a border of cloud forms joined by lines, which is worked in metal thread. There is a further outer border of trailing branches bearing mauve and white flowers and leaves, with butterflies at intervals and in the corners.

The panel is attached on all four sides to a broad band of red and buff brocade, woven with a pattern of bird medallions, flowers and trellis work.

Wooden rods are inserted at the top and bottom.
