2nd half 19th century

A rectangular box with hinged lid on two hinges, lacquered overall in gold and black. There are brass bail handles at either end, that on the right being missing. The front carries a lock, the key now missing.
The interior and base are lacquered plain black, while the four sides are decorated with plain gold lines in gold lacquer on black. The top is decorated with an outer band of floral ornament. Inside this, at each corner, are further flowers in shades of gold. A central lobed cartouche is painted with figures in a pavilion, set among trees and water, all executed in shades of gold with touches of red and black on a black ground.
Inside is a container of pasteboard, the upper edges trimmed with silk, divided into seventeen variously shaped compartments.
Each compartment contained an ivory carved puzzle or toy; some are missing from this box. Those remaining are: the ladder puzzle, four ring puzzle, a fretted ivory 'tangram', another flat puzzle, a solid cube, two set of blocks forming three dimensional figures, two sets of spillikins, acrobats, cup and ball, an incomplete set of alphabet letters in a box, a spinning top.
The box was given to lord Londesborough in China in 1890.
