Until the 20th century, the principal method of transporting goods in bulk from one part of Japan to another was by sea. Lockable chests with strong – as well as decorative – fittings were an essential piece of equipment in which merchants kept money and accounts ledgers. Inside the chest are six drawers, two of which have further locks.
