CHAY ROOT

The red dye extracted from the roots of the chay plant (Oldenlandia umbellata) is one of India’s most important dyes. It was used for the patterned cottons (‘chintz’) exported to Europe from the 17th century, which revolutionised western interiors and dress. Chay grows only in south-east India and Sri Lanka, giving rise to the extensive textile manufactures of the Coromandel Coast.
