Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
These lengths of gota, ribbon woven of silk and strips of metal, were collected for the Paris Exhibition of 1855. Gota is often used to embellish dress and textiles in South Asia, and can be sewn flat along borders, twisted into designs and couched down, or cut into smaller pieces for applique-work. Gota is made in a wide range of widths and styles, from plain silver or gold to patterned with coloured silks or embossed stamping techniques. These examples have been embossed with designs that give them a 3D effect.
